What is knitted mesh?

Knitted wire mesh is based on the same principle as garment knitting, but is produced using specialized heavy machinery. Originally formed in tubular form, knitting material was rolled into flat socks ranging in width from 6 mm to 1000 mm. The material has interlocking asymmetrical coils that move relative to each other, allowing lateral and longitudinal stretching.

Because each ring bends like a small spring, this also provides high elasticity. The mesh can be used in its original flat form or further processed by layering, folding, rolling, stitching or compressing. A common technique is to press the metal mesh through rollers to form a diagonal or herringbone pattern. This gives the mesh an extra depth, usually between 4mm and 8mm.

Knitted wire mesh material

Almost any material that can be drawn into wires or filaments can be used to make woven nets. The table below lists the most commonly used wires, filaments and yarns. Circular threads with diameters of 0.11mm to 0.35mm are usually braided, but 0.03mm or 0.8mm diameters may also be braided for special applications. Flat and multi-filament braiding can be used to increase surface area.
